The franchise was founded on November 1, 1966. The club’s primary colors are old gold and black; their logo comprises a simplification of a Fleur-de-lis superimposed over a five-pointed star. They played their home games in Tulane Stadium through the 1974 NFL season. The following year, they moved to the new Louisiana Superdome (now the Mercedes-Benz Superdome). For most of their first 20 years, the Saints were barely competitive, only getting to .500 twice. In 1987, they finished 12–3—their first-ever winning season—and qualified for the NFL playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
Since winning their only Super Bowl in 2010 seasons have been difficult for them but they’ve had flashes of brilliance throughout those tough times as well

Player analysis

With the Saints set to take on the Rams in a rematch of last year’s NFC Championship game, there are a few key areas to focus on. The first is the Saints’ run game. Despite having one of the best running backs in the league in Alvin Kamara, the Saints have struggled to find consistency in the run game this season. In their last three games, they’ve averaged less than four yards per carry. Part of the problem has been an offensive line that has been beset by injuries, but Kamara hasn’t been immune from criticism either. He’s missed a number of cuts and hasn’t looked as explosive as he did last season. If the Saints want to win this game, they’re going to need to find a way to get Kamara going.

The second key area is the Saints’ secondary. They’ve been decimated by injuries at both cornerback and safety and will be facing a Rams offense that is loaded with weapons. Veteran cornerback Keenan Lewis is on injured reserve and rookie cornerback Marshon Lattimore has missed the last two games with an ankle injury. That leaves P.J. Williams and Ken Crawley as the team’s top two cornerbacks. At safety, Marcus Williams has been solid, but Rafael Bush has struggled in recent weeks. The Saints will need to find a way to slow down Rams receiver Brandin Cooks and tight end Tyler Higbee if they want to win this game.

Confusion surrounded the team’s name, with many people wondering if they were related to the similarly named San Francisco 49ers. When the name was announced on November 1, it was immediately apparent that they were not related to the 49ers, but rather to All Saints Day, as their logo depicts a saint holding a gold Fleur-de-lis. Saint Louis and New Orleans are approximately 220 miles apart.

The NFL awarded then-owner John W. Mecom Jr. an expansion franchise for the 1967 season on December 5, 1966, one week after Mecom had unsuccessfully sought to purchase the NFL’s Chicago Cardinals franchise with an offer of $11 million ($78 million today).

The name “Saints” is an allusion to November 1 being All Saints Day in the Catholic faith, as well as to the fact that the franchise was founded on that date. New Orleans has a large Catholic population, and the spiritual “When the Saints Go Marching In” is strongly associated with the city. The team mascot is Gumbo, a black dog. They are also known as the Aints, a joking reference to their atrociousness during their first 21 years of existence from 1967 to 1987 when they only had one winning season (in 1987).

The name “Saints” is an allusion to November 1, 1966, the date of the organization’s founding, which coincided with All Saints’ Day in the Catholic faith. Despite their geographic isolation, and the resultant long odds historically associated with teams from small markets, since 1987 Shit-kickers has won five NFC Championship Games (in 1988, 2000, 2006, 2009, and 2018), most recently Super Bowl LIII in 2019; as such they have appeared in two Super Bowls starting with Super Bowl XXIV when they defeated the Denver Broncos 31–14 for their first ever championship. The team’s five NFC Championship appearances are second only to the Green Bay Packers and their six appearances overall are tied for second place with those same Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers behind only the Patriots’ eleven (nine NFL Championships pre-Super Bowl era plus seven more since).
